Buffy Cast: Gellar, Boreanaz, Hannigan, Brendon

Where Are the Actors From the Hit TV Series Now?

Feb 9, 2009 Sarah Stefanson

Five years after Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended, the young cast that starred in the series have gone their separate ways with varying success.

When Buffy the Vampire Slayer wrapped for the final time in 2003, the cast was heartbroken to have to leave the family of cast and crew members they had worked with for seven years. Since then some of the actors have moved on to fame and fortune, while others have not gotten far with their careers. Where are they now?

Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy)

Sarah Michelle Gellar kept busy starring in movies while she was playing Buffy Summers on the hit TV show. During Buffy’s production she also starred in films like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream and Cruel Intentions. After leaving Buffy behind, she was seen in The Grudge and its sequel, securing her place as a “scream queen” in the movies. Her latest film projects include Veronika Decides to Die and Possession, both to be released in 2009. It is rumoured that she will return to the small screen for HBO’s upcoming series, The Wonderful Maladys. Gellar’s varied movie career has yielded a box office gross of $627.3 million as of September 2008.

On the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer, Gellar met Freddie Prinze Jr., the man that would become her husband. They wed in Mexico in 2002 and are happily married to this day. In 2007, Gellar legally changed her name to Sarah Michelle Prinze to acknowledge the couple’s fifth anniversary. She has been involved in charity work for breast cancer research, Project Angel Food, Habitat for Humanity and CARE.

David Boreanaz (Angel)

David Boreanaz left Buffy the Vampire Slayer in its second season to star in its spin-off series, Angel. Angel ran for five seasons until 2004. Boreanaz has appeared in some low profile films, but his bread and butter has always been television. In 2005, he began playing Seeley Booth opposite Emily Deschanel’s Temperance Brennan on the series, Bones. He lent his voice as the Green Lantern to an animated movie called Justice League: The New Frontier.

Boreanaz married his second and current wife, Jaime Bergman in 2001 and their son, Jaden Rayne Boreanaz, was born in 2002.

Alyson Hannigan (Willow)

Alyson Hannigan capitalized on the buzz created by playing Willow Rossenberg in Buffy by starring in several teen-oriented movies including American Pie, American Pie 2, Boys and Girls and American Wedding. Hannigan starred in a stage adaptation of When Harry Met Sally opposite Luky Perry in 2004. She currently plays Lily in the television series How I Met Your Mother and has continued to take parts in movies.

Hannigan married Buffy and Angel co-star Alexis Denisof (Wesley Wyndham-Pryce) in 2003 and they are expecting their first child in the spring of 2009.

Nicholas Brendon (Xander)

Once his role as Xander had ended, Nicholas Brendon was cast in a new Fox sitcom called Kitchen Confidential, which was based on the book by chef Anthony Bourdain. The series was cancelled after the fourth episode. He voiced an animated character in the series American Dragon: Jake Long from 2006 to 2007. In the summer of 2006, Brendon co-starred with Noah Wyle in the play Lobster Alice. That year, he reunited with Buffy co-star Charisma Carpenter in the ABC TV movie, Relative Chaos.

Brendon was married to actress Tressa DiFiglia in 2001, but they divorced in 2007. He has suffered from alcoholism and attended rehab for his problem. Brendon served as honourary chairperson of the Stuttering Foundation of America from 2000 to 2003.
