Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
One of the hit television shows in the late 1990s and early 2000s, BTVS [abbreviation used by fans] has been both the source of great controversy and also great social change in the American media. These two shows have been a great influence not only for teenagers but for the media itself, spurring change such as portrayals of sexual orientation and body image.
But what is it?
A viewer needs to know some background information. However, the movie from 1992 will be gloriously ignored and even defamed.
Buffy Summers is a new transfer student from LA and seems like a regular beach blonde airhead with great fashion sense. However, that’s not the case. Buffy Summers is in fact...a vampire slayer! She spends her nights patrolling graveyards and staking vampires, her days studying and trying to not get kicked out of school while balancing slaying and homework. The librarian is her watcher or guide and she has a small group of friends who help her out.
On the seven season journey, she will die twice, fall in love with a vampire, aptly named Angel, avert the end of the world numerous times, have a little sister whose really a mystical ball of energy, stake many vampires and demons, battle a god, receive a new watcher, battle a rogue slayer, date another vampire named Spike and destroy the city.
Buffy Summers – a smart, fashionable blonde who is the Chosen One, the vampire slayer. She is the main character and the leader of the gang, always ready with a witty remark or pun.
Xander Harris – the joker and goofball of the gang. He’s portrayed as a typical teenage boy but grows into a capable guy who is the glue that keeps the gang together.
Willow Rosenberg – the bookworm and nerd of the group. She changes very dramatically during the course of the show, going from painfully shy nerd and brainiac to outgoing and sure of herself.
Rupert Giles – the Watcher of the group. A very staid and sometimes too proper Englishman who serves as the father figure in Buffy’s life. He was the school librarian.
Anya – A former Vengeance demon who specialised in punishing men, trapped in human form for the most part of the series. She becomes engaged to Xander.
Dawn Summers – Dawn is Buffy’s little kid sister, or so everyone thinks. In reality, she is a mystical ball of energy called the Key which opens portals into other dimensions.
Angel – Buffy’s one and only true love. He is over 200 years old and was one of the most evil vampires in the world with a real art for killing. However, he was cursed with a soul by Gypsies and now lives forever atoning for his bad deeds.
Spike – Angel’s ‘grandson’, a Cockney rebel patterned after Sid Vicious. A nasty vampire who is obsessed with Buffy and killing her, got his nickname from torturing his victims with railroad spikes. He killed two slayers.
Drusilla – Spike’s great love and Angel’s ‘daughter’. She’s cursed with precognitive abilities and was driven insane by Angel before being sired. Killed a slayer during season 2.
Darla – The sire of Angel, seen more during flashbacks than anyone else. She was staked by Angel but was resurrected on his spin-off show, Angel’s love and mother with a devious mind second only to Angel’s.
